November Punchlist

Election Day Recap

Once again we want to congratulate and thank all of the candidates we have had the privilege of working with along with our volunteers and supporters who have put in countless hours this election cycle.

In terms of Election Day results, they are mostly unchanged since yesterday’s update. This morning, Fox13 reported there are still 170,000 uncounted ballots in Salt Lake County alone as many voters returned their ballots close to Election Day or voted in person.

We’ll continue to monitor key races and provide updates as they are available.

US Magnesium Public Comment Period

Utah Division of Water Quality has extended the public comment period for US Magnesium’s permit until Monday, November 14.

The Division of Water Quality intends to issue US Magnesium, a Section 401 Water Quality Certification, for the extension of two intake canals in Gilbert Bay on the Great Salt Lake as the lake’s current low levels do not allow their canals to reach the lake.

US Magnesium is one of the top air polluters in the country and their permit approval would result in less water, more lakebed toxins, and more air pollution along the Wasatch Front.

Check out the US Magnesium Public Comment Toolkit, which local nonprofits focused on the Great Salt Lake compiled, to learn how to submit a comment and what to include.

O2 Utah Volunteer Project & Staff Retreat

The O2 Utah team is headed to Washington County this weekend for a few days of wilderness stewardship volunteering with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA).

The weekend will also serve as our staff’s fall retreat where we’ll recap the past election cycle, set our goals for the upcoming year, and enjoy some time together in the desert.

SUWA is the only non-partisan, non-profit organization working full-time to defend Utah’s red rock wilderness and protect the irreplaceable heritage for all Americans.

Giving Tuesday

November means elections, warm socks, pumpkin pie, and…Giving Tuesday!

Along with gathering with friends and family, the holiday season is also the time of year when we open our hearts to the nonprofit organizations we love in our community.

This year’s Giving Tuesday is on November 29 but it’s never too early to contribute to the global day of generosity.

We’ve set a goal for 25 individuals to donate during our Giving Tuesday drive. Can we count on you to help us jump-start this Giving Tuesday with a contribution?

Our staff, our candidates, and our air quality thank you in advance for your generosity.

Staff Recs

Greg is baking...

"Fresh-baked English muffins. These things are easy to make and better than store-bought by a mile. I am a big breakfast guy and I like to start my day with something substantial. I use this recipe to make a batch, then I freeze them so I can pop one in the toaster for a Greg McMuffin (egg and cheddar, turkey breakfast sausage optional).

Eli is cooking...

"Homemade Ramen. Visited the ever-reliable Sage Market and whipped up a kombu broth with dashi-rehydrated shiitake mushrooms. Big bowl of ramen with some noodles and a soft-boiled egg — the perfect dinner as the weather starts to turn."

Travis is watching...

All Quiet on the Western Front, on Netflix. Really great remake of a fascinating story during the first World War."

Eliza is reading...

"The Secret Knowledge of Water. The stories are really interesting, especially as we try to better understand how to deal with our water shortage."

Bronti is sporting...

"Bike fenders. They keep you dry in these wet winter conditions and keep you biking year-round in style."

David is watching...

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I just watched it for the first time and it is, hands-down, one of the best animated movies I’ve ever seen."
