2023 Municipal Primary Election Update

Updated on Monday, September 18

Now that all primary results have been finalized, we are excited to share that nine of our endorsed candidates are moving on to November’s general election!

This includes David Rodgers (Murray City Council, D1), who was in a very tight race, in addition to Jim Bennett (Sandy City Council), Jordan Davis (Draper City Council), Aaron Dekeyzer (Sandy City Council), Dave Graf (Ogden City Council, D4), Ted Knowlton (North Salt Lake City Council), Taylor Knuth (Ogden Mayor), Collin Larson (North Salt Lake City Council), and Marni LeFevre (West Valley City Council, D1).

Additionally, five other O₂ Utah-endorsed candidates are in Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) cities or did not have enough primary challengers and will also be moving on to the general. This includes Dan Dugan (Salt Lake City Council, D6), Adam Hock (Murray City Council, D5), Molly Jones (Salt Lake City Council, D7), Natalie Pinkney (South Salt Lake City Council), and Ana Valdemoros (Salt Lake City Council, D4).

Unfortunately, Angel Castillo will not be moving on in the Ogden Mayoral race. We know Angel will continue to be a strong advocate for Ogden’s environmental future.

Thank you to everyone who voted in this year’s municipal primary election and participated in the campaign process. The municipal cycle is crucial for electing our local climate leaders and advancing policies to achieve 100% renewable energy and ensure positive environmental outcomes.

And a special thank you to all of our amazing volunteers and supporters for their hard work canvassing, texting, and making phone calls to encourage their fellow citizens to vote.

Although races will be certified on Sept. 19, we want to provide an update on where things stand with O₂ Utah-endorsed candidates. Remember, many of these races and outcomes could still change! We’ll have another update when the results are official.

We are optimistic a number of our endorsed candidates will be moving on to November's general election, including Jim Bennett (Sandy City Council), Jordan Davis (Draper City Council), Aaron Dekeyzer (Sandy City Council), Dave Graf (Ogden City Council, D4), Ted Knowlton (North Salt Lake City Council), Taylor Knuth (Ogden Mayor), Collin Larson (North Salt Lake City Council), and Marni LeFevre (West Valley City Council, D1).

Two of our endorsed candidates, Angel Castillo (Ogden Mayor) and David Rodgers (Murray City Council, D1), are currently behind but are in extremely close races.

With more votes to be counted, stay tuned for more updates coming soon!
